Islam Makhachev Has The Most Level-Headed Take Explaining Why He Still Didn't Earn #1 P4P Spot After UFC 294

At UFC 294, Islam Makhachev produced the most impressive performance of his career to defend his lightweight title.

Whilst his opponent Alexander Volkanovski may have taken the fight on less than two weeks notice, their first fight was a closely contested affair over 25 minutes.

This time around, the champ left no room for debate, stopping Alexander “The Great” in the first round following a devastating head kick that dropped the featherweight champion.

With his win, fans immediately pointed to the fact that Makhachev is now deserving of the number one pound-for-pound status.

After beating Volkanovski in February, the 155-pound champ remained below him in the rankings and this is something that Makhachev was clearly thinking about ahead of the rematch.

Islam Makhachev Understands Why UFC May Have Retained Jon Jones At #1 In P4P Rankings

Before their showdown in Abu Dhabi, Makhachev made it clear that he believed that he should be above both Volkanovski and the heavyweight champion Jon Jones.

To the lightweight champion’s point, there can be no arguments that anyone can match Makhachev’s recent run of results after just taking out a fellow champion in the first round.

Despite that, the rankings update only saw him swap places with his Australian foe from Saturday night, leaving “Bones” still at the top of the ladder after his return to competition earlier this year.

In a video for Red Corner MMA, Makhachev gave his reaction to the rankings update, expressing disappointment that he isn’t at the top of the heap. However, he did mention he understood why the UFC wanted to keep Jones there, considering he has a big fight coming up against Stipe Miocic that needs promoting.

“I have already said at the press conference, who makes these rankings? What do they do it for? I have no clue. I beat the pound-for-pound king before, they didn’t put me as number one so now, I am not surprised they did it this way again.

“Maybe that’s because he (Jones) is fighting soon so they want to promote his fight. I don’t understand what else I should do to get the number one spot other than beat the one who was number one.”
