Many video game fans were surprised when EA Sports announced that UFC 5 will feature Mike Tyson, Muhammad Ali, and Fedor Emelianenko as bonus playable characters. The trio of fighting legends are available to those who buy the EA Sports UFC 5 Deluxe Edition. It’s the first of the series to have these legendary fighters in the MMA game, as fans hope to create dream matchups.
In EA Sports UFC 4, heavyweight boxers Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua were special playable characters. That fans could get by pre-ordering before the August 14, 2020, release date. However, they could also be bought as downloadable content later on, which could happen for EA Sports UFC 5.
Despite the addition of Tyson, Ali, and Emelianenko in the upcoming UFC game, it has raised the question of other unique characters that we’d wished would be playable in EA Sports UFC 5.
Here are the six special characters we think would’ve been great to have involved in the game.
Earlier this year, UFC Chief Executive Officer and President Dana White sought to have billionaire Mark Zuckerburg and Elon Musk fight each other in the Octagon. While it’s unclear how serious Musk was about competing, Zuckerburg was training with Alexander Volkanovski and Israel Adesanya. According to White, the fight was seemingly close to happening. However, the matchup fell through, and fans will never know what would’ve happened if the two billionaires had fought in the UFC.
That said, as a unique playable character in EA Sports UFC 5, Zuckerberg would’ve allowed fans to see him fight, even though it’s a game. His striking skills may not be as high as others, but he’d have the jiu-jitsu ability that could make things interesting. It didn’t make much sense for Zuckerburg to be competing in the UFC, but it does in a video game.
Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. is regarded as one of the greatest fighters in combat sports history. His boxing accomplishments are legendary, but his legacy transcends the sport to become a pop culture icon. That said, he has flirted with stepping into the Octagon and showing if he could compete in MMA, particularly with rival UFC lightweight Conor McGregor. Unfortunately, it seems that time has passed for Mayweather Jr., and he is enjoying the riches he’s earned from his career.
His inclusion in EA Sports UFC 5 would’ve been a fun way to test Mayweather’s MMA skills. It could’ve been interesting to see how his impeccable defensive style would’ve worked against the likes of McGregor in the game. We’ll never see him fight in the UFC, so playing him as a unique character in EA Sports UFC 5 seems like a fun idea.
Heavyweight boxing knockout artist Deontay Wilder seems perfect for being a special character for a UFC game. EA Sports had Fury and Joshua for the last game, but Wilder seemed like a better option because of his devasting one-punch knockout power. He has also teased wanting to compete in MMA, as he thinks the power would be even more damaging with four-ounce gloves.
Playing as Wilder in EA Sports UFC 5 had the potential of fun matchups against competitors as they tried to avoid getting knocked out. Having Tyson is not a bad alternative, but “The Bronze Bomber” seems more relevant as a special character.
Former MMA and kickboxing legend Bob Sapp is one of the most unique fighters ever to compete. His incredible physique and charisma helped make him a superstar, even though he didn’t have the best win/loss record. Like Emelianenko, Sapp is a rare case of someone who didn’t compete in the UFC and still became a recognized name in MMA.
Sapp, being in the upcoming UFC game, had the potential of unique matchups for gamers against the best heavyweights currently. UFC fans could have dream fights like playing a well-rounded Jon Jones against “The Beast” with his dangerous power. No matter who you would play to face Sapp, you’d always have to be wary that one punch could end the fight based on what Sapp did in his career.
MMA legend Takanori Gomi was one of the early fan favorites in smaller weight classes during the early days of MMA. Although he gained fame in Pride Fighting Championship, he would find his way to UFC. He’s stood in front of lightweight greats in UFC like Nate Diaz, Kenny Florian, and Diego Sanchez to help make memorable moments. While he never became a UFC Champion and suffered more losses in UFC than wins, he was a fan favorite in the lightweight division that doesn’t get enough recognition.
With his exciting skillset, Gomi would’ve made a great addition to the EA Sports UFC 5 lightweight roster. It would also be an excellent way to introduce younger UFC fans unfamiliar with “The Fireball Kid.”
In recent years, UFC fans have recognized the likes of Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz, and Rashard Evans as people who helped popularize the company in its early days. Unfortunately, former UFC Superfight Champion Ken Shamrock isn’t as celebrated for his early contributions. He was a unique star in the ’90s known as “The World Most Dangerous Man,” competing in the UFC and several years in professional wrestling. Shamrock was ahead of his time for having a successful career in MMA and then jumping to WWE(then WWF) being a household name, which also spotlighted MMA.
In the recent games for UFC, EA Sports has included past legends like Evans and Liddell, so it would’ve been nice to have Shamrock finally be a playable character. Like Gomi, it would help younger fans who may not be familiar today with Shamrock get to appreciate him.
Plenty of fun and exciting characters could’ve been in the upcoming EA Sports UFC game, and it doesn’t rule out it can’t happen in the future. UFC fans being able to play with Tyson, Ali, and Emelianenko is an excellent addition to what should be a great game by EA Sports.
However, it won’t stop fans from thinking of more exciting characters they could play against current UFC stars.
